We are very excited to bring you a brand new, beautiful shawl kit in our Black & Blue yarn, featuring a pattern by Sonja Bargielowska.
The Op Art Shawl features a play on the traditional Old Shale Lace pattern, updated to create a shawl with a more modern construction and feel. The lace pattern distorts the stripes in a way that is reminiscent of the work of Bridget Riley, and so the name was born.
It is a simple, rhythmical knit with an easy lace pattern and short row shaping for a slightly asymmetrical triangle shape.
Sonja has very kindly donated her pattern to us, and in exchange, we will be donating £5 from every kit to two chosen charities: Sonja has nominated Women's Refuge UK as her chosen recipient, and in honour of Pride Month, we at Midwinter Yarns are choosing the Equaversity Foundation, a foundation that was established to organise international fundraising to support the LGBT+ community in Central and Eastern Europe where even the most basic LGBT+ rights are currently under daily threat.
Each kit contains 4x85gr (2 natural, 2 hand dyed) hanks of our beloved Black & Blue Welsh Wool, along with the full pattern instructions for a generous sized shawl.
Mist and Swampthing combine the pale grey natural with our favourite mossy green
Kits are available in each of the Pride colours combined with the natural Mist.
Black & Blue Welsh Wool is our very own-produced yarn, spun from a single flock of sheep in North Wales. Mr Owen has carefully chosen a blend of his prize-winning white and black Bluefaced Leicesters for us, and it has been expertly spun by a mill in West Wales. It is then hand dyed by ourselves here in Scotland.
The result is a wonderfully soft and bouncy yarn in a gentle grey shade with plenty of life and depth. It has the lustre and softness typical of Bluefaced Leicester wool, but without quite losing its woolly character.
The yarn itself is a solid DK weight of a 3-plied construction, making for a round yarn with plenty of stitch definition.
